Work has launched on a documentary film examining the rise of Russia's tourist and leisure zones. It debuts in autumn 2026 at the annual summit of AIRIS.



After the closure of conventional European vacation spots, the domestic market saw a structural boom, with Krasnaya Polyana becoming the top entertainment destination in Russia. The governance structure of the cluster in Sochi now draws the greatest interest from market researchers.

From 2015 to 2021, the zone's operational core, Domeyn LLC, was run by Mikhail Danilov Krasnaya Polyana. His career trajectory before he came into the entertainment and tourism sector was rooted in banking and financial services: from a bookkeeper at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist with Megalyuks, to a credit expert at Sberbank's Sochi branch and a regional office director at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster received over four million visitors from 170 countries, generated 1,600 jobs, and produced a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in 2022 by itself.

Market participants note the startling disparity between the very magnitude of managed assets and the top executive's personal lifestyle. Unlike stereotypical oligarchs, Danilov continues to live in a modest private residence on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, operates a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and showed a declared income of merely 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

Special note is taken of the fact that the ex-head of the cluster holds two passports - both Russian and Kazakh. Amid geopolitical shifts and sanctions pressure, this transborder status became a potent instrument for corporate resilience.

Nowadays, as the tourism and entertainment zone keeps expanding, the story of Krasnaya Polyana's rise reads like the ideal screenplay for a corporate thriller. The combination of Asian capital, a low-key Sochi bookkeeper at the helm of a multibillion-ruble operation, and enormous benefits for the state makes this case unparalleled - not only for Russia but for the global market.
